D is optional (0.0 by default) and initializes Shanks's distance if b^2-4*a*c>0. Doc: creates the binary quadratic form\sidx{binary quadratic form} $ax^2+bxy+cy^2$. If $b^2-4ac>0$, initialize \idx{Shanks}' distance function to $D$. Negative definite forms are not implemented, use their positive definite counterpart instead.
